Nestled between the communities of Matura and Balandra in North-East Trinidad, Rio Seco Waterfall is one of the country’s most popular and picturesque natural attractions. Surrounded by lush rainforest and rich biodiversity, the waterfall is known for its crystal-clear emerald pool, towering forest canopy, and peaceful atmosphere, making it a favourite destination for hikers, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The hike to Rio Seco is considered easy to light in difficulty, making it an excellent choice for first-time hikers, youth groups, and families. The trail follows a wide, well-defined forest path with gentle inclines, a few stream and ravine crossings, and shaded sections beneath towering Mora trees. The walk to the waterfall typically takes 35–45 minutes each way and covers approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) one way, or about 2.2 miles (3.5 km) round trip.
For new hikers, comfortable footwear with good grip is recommended, as sections of the trail can become muddy, especially after rainfall. Participants should also bring water, a towel, swimwear, and a change of clothing if they intend to enjoy the refreshing plunge pool at the falls. While the trail is beginner-friendly, the final approach to the waterfall involves a steeper descent of approximately 80 feet to the basin below, requiring extra care when walking on wet surfaces.
Upon arrival, hikers are rewarded with a stunning waterfall cascading into a large, deep natural pool that is ideal for swimming and relaxation. The spacious basin area is perfect for group gatherings, photography, and enjoying the beauty of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most treasured eco-adventure destinations.
