KV Lifeline Foundation seeks to pilot a series of workshops that deal with pre- and
post-natal health and wellness for mothers and babies. As an extension of the KV Lifeline
Foundation “Healthy Lifestyle Health Caravan,” this workshop seeks to create greater
awareness of the need for and importance of good health and nutrition during and after
pregnancy both for mothers and babies.

Studies have shown that eating and fitness patterns that begin during pregnancy can affect
health and wellbeing across a child’s lifespan. We are in the midst of a childhood obesity
epidemic that threatens to leave our children with a shorter life expectancy than their
parents. As processed foods become more readily available around the world, developed
nations are beginning to follow suit.

The KV Lifeline Foundation believes that it is crucial that we find ways to educate parents
on the importance of good nutrition and physical activity for the development of their
    children.

The “Healthy Mommy, Healthy Baby” series will be delivered over a two (2) day period and will include the following topics and objectives:

    a. Pre- and Post-natal Fitness

1  Identify the effect of exercise on maternal and fetal health.
2  Describe anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
3  Outline safe and appropriate exercise design for the prenatal and postpartum
    woman.
4  Identify specific and appropriate exercises and activities for the prenatal and
    postpartum woman.
5  Identify complications and common conditions of pregnancy and postpartum and
    management strategies.

    instruction and programming.

techniques for the arm, legs, and feet, the tummy and back, and the head and face.
2  Explain general guidelines for instructing an infant movement program and
demonstrate eight infant movements to be performed by parent and baby and
suggest interactive activities for parents and baby.

    prevention of childhood overweight.

4  State the nutrition problems related to fast food consumption and list three optimal
meal choices to minimize these problems.
5  Describe the influence television has on children’s food choices and recommend
two ways forparents to cope with it.
6  Discuss how nutrition affects dental health.

    d. Maternal and Infant Nutrition

1  Discuss growth patterns of infants from birth to 12 months.
2  List the benefits of breastfeeding to mothers and infants.
3  Define feeding practices that result in breastfeeding success in the early weeks.
4  Analyze the diet of a breastfeeding woman and make recommendations for
improving the quality of her diet.
5  Describe feeding recommendations for normal healthy infants.
6  Describe the progression of foods in relationship to infant development.
7  Discuss the feeding relationship and the roles of infants and parents at different
    ages through the first year.

These workshops will be conducted by Shivma Maharaj who is certified by the International
    Childbirth Education Association.

The KV Lifeline Foundation expects that these series of workshops will not only aid in
increasing the awareness of the importance of good nutrition and physical activity in
infants and children but impact overall patterns of consumption and production. This in
turn can lead to a healthier more active population.
